One form of technology being used to heal and cleanse the body is Far-Infrared Radiant (FIR) heat delivered in a sauna. Saunas have been around for hundreds of years in Europe, especially Northern Europe. In America, some of the earliest inhabitants developed the tradition of “sweat lodges” for both health and spiritual benefits.

Heat enhances blood circulation and promotes oxygenation of body tissues. It provides proven relief of aches, pains and stiffness. Heat also increases energy production in the body. This facilitates healing and requires the burning of calories, which results in effortless weight loss. It also causes an increase in heart rate, which results in an effortless cardiovascular workout.

The skin is a major eliminative organ for toxins and waste. Sweating enhances the skin’s elimination process. An infrared sauna heats the body with radiant heat and profuse sweating begins quickly. The surrounding air in the sauna, however, remains cool. The experience is both comfortable and pleasant.

Traditional saunas, steam baths, hot tubs and exercise are other means of sweating. Steam, hot water and traditional saunas that operate at over 170oF are difficult to tolerate for more than a few minutes. Infrared saunas remains at 110oF to 120oF and one can spend longer periods in the healing, relaxing, listening to favorite music and reading. While hot tubs are good to a point, sweating is less than in the infrared sauna and the body absorbs chemicals from the water. Exercise vigorous enough to produce copious sweating is too exhausting for most and very challenging if not impossible for others with deep and long existing, injuries, illnesses and debilitating imbalances.

Everyone today is exposed to some form of toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Regular use of an infrared sauna is an excellent way to detoxify the body, improve circulation and help the body awaken its own natural healing process. Infrared heat penetrates several inches deep into joints and muscles. This increases the metabolism and circulation as well as supporting the body cells in eliminating toxins more readily thru the sweat.

Infrared light is completely natural and safe. Its dry, warming energy is highly compatible with human tissue. Its wavelength is the same as the radiant heat from the sun and all life requires sun light. Infrared saunas provide all the benefits of natural sunlight without the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.

The warmth of the sun and the warmth you feel when you rub your hands together are forms of infrared heat. Far Infrared rays should not to be confused with Ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn and skin damage. FIR is a form of energy that directly transmits, or penetrates, into objects and our bodies because of its specific wavelength.

There are near (NIR), mid (MIR) and far (FIR) infrared waves. “Far” means that the infrared waves measure in the “far” range of the light spectrum. Far-infrared waves have no visible light. “Infra” means below and describes the rays as those that are below the “red” visible and damaging rays of the light spectrum. Far-infrared heat waves are used to safely warm newborn babies in incubators.

Far-infrared heaters, such as those in SaunaGen saunas, simulate the conversion of the energy of the sun into penetrating warmth that naturally heats objects without heating the air around them.

Far-infrared heat waves are gentle and comfortable. The waves are absorbed by your skin and penetrate as deep as 1-2 inches into your body to warm you directly and quickly. Because it heats you and not the air, the heat in a far-infrared sauna is not harsh on your lungs or skin like old-fashioned traditional steam and rock saunas. The warmth that you feel relaxes muscles, reduces stress, increases circulation and burns calories.

Also, because of the deep penetration of the rays, you will sweat more toxins out of your body than you would in a traditional sauna. Far-infrared sauna sessions are widely accepted as one of the most effective ways to detoxify your system from toxins, heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum, pesticides and other impurities.

Ceramic far-infrared heaters emit far-infrared rays that measure in the 5-14 microns range, which best matches the measurement of our bodies’ infrared wavelengths. Therefore, far-infrared heaters that are made with ceramic are considered to be the most natural, safe and effective type of far-infrared heaters. Not all far-infrared heaters are made with ceramic, so it is very important to ask what the heaters are made of when shopping for a far-infrared sauna and settle for nothing less than 100% pure ceramic.

FIR saunas are not only for supporting your body to "re-member health," but they are simple and easy to use for most people as a tool to cleanse and awaken their bodies innate ability to heal and harmonize.

The above information was collected by our colleague and friend, Bryan Kravitz.

He did extensive research in the area of FIR saunas looking at viability, effectiveness, quality and cost. The product he found to be most in alignment with his focus are saunas created by SaunaGen. These units are portable, very reasonably priced, easy to assemble and home use suitable. If you are interested in offering yourself a simple and supportive form of helping yourself improve your health, FIR saunas are a beneficial option.
